A SUSSEX seminar is examining how future LEADER funding could support the rural economy from 2015.

LEADER, part of the Rural Development Programme for England, aims to improve the competitiveness of farming and forestry, support a diverse and successful rural economy, and help to develop vibrant and thriving rural communities.

Two existing LEADER programmes in Sussex and East Hampshire have already provided more than £2.8 million of grants to rural businesses and community groups supporting 153 projects to date.

They include the purchase of equipment and development of premises to support business growth, farm diversification and modernisation and community shops and other rural facilities.

The two LEADER groups will be bidding to Defra for more funding for 2015 – 2020 to continue the good work.

The proposed new LEADER areas would cover rural West Sussex, Lewes District and rural parts of Hayling Island.

Local farmers, growers, small rural businesses and community groups in these areas would then be able to apply for grants to fund their project ideas.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: "LEADER funding is incredibly important for West Sussex in helping to support our rural economy.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for our farming, forestry and small rural businesses and communities to find out how the LEADER programme could help them grow and for them to play a key part in helping to shape our bid to Defra."

A workshop focusing on Arun and Chichester Districts and Hayling Island will take place at Chichester District Council Committee Rooms at 1 East Pallant, Chichester, on Friday 4 July 2014.

A second workshop focusing on Horsham, Mid Sussex and Lewis Districts will follow on 8 July 2014 at the South of England Showground, Norfolk Pavilion, in Ardingly. Both workshops will run from 12.00noon–4.00pm.
