Digital Landline Switchover: Supporting Customers In Vulnerable Circumstances

28 Sep 2026

The UK’s analogue landline network will be switched over to digital in January 2027.

BT is stepping up efforts to remind Consumer customers why they shouldn’t ignore the move from analogue to digital landlines with less than six months before the outdated landline network is phased out, they’re focused on moving the remaining minority of customers as soon as possible.

BT is urging anyone who is yet to switch to engage with them promptly to avoid the risk of service disruption.

BT has been working with a number of selected local authorities to pilot approaches for identifying and supporting vulnerable customers who remain on the PSTN network, helping to reduce the risk of service disconnection when the network is retired in 2027.

Following the success of this pilot programme, BT is now expanding the initiative nationwide, partnering with local authorities across the UK to identify and assist customers in potentially vulnerable circumstances who continue to rely on their landline service.

To support vulnerable customers in the final months of the programme, BT are encouraging Local Authorities to sign up to a Data Sharing Agreement (DSA). This agreement allows them to securely share information about customers in vulnerable circumstances who have not yet migrated their landlines, enabling targeted support where it is needed most.
