Have Your Say On The Future Of Freeview

17 Aug 2026

The Rural Services Network has responded to the Government’s consultation on the future of TV and we are encouraging rural organisations and residents to have their say.

The Government is considering whether digital terrestrial television, commonly known as Freeview, should be switched off at the end of 2034 or retained until the end of 2044.

While RSN recognises the benefits of moving towards internet-delivered television, our response strongly supports the 2044 option. Significant gaps in rural broadband remain, while affordability, digital skills and the higher proportion of older residents in rural communities must also be considered.

Freeview currently provides a free and reliable service that does not depend on an internet subscription. Any future transition must therefore protect universal access and include targeted support for those who may otherwise be left behind.

The RSN is a member of the Broadcast 2040+ campaign, which brings together 39 organisations calling for Freeview to be protected until 2044. We are encouraging organisations and residents across rural communities to respond to the consultation,

The consultation closes on 31 August 2026.
