Johnson’s options for Environment Secretary

The Farmers Guardian lays out the rumoured front runners for the Prime Minister’s next Environment Secretary if Theresa Villiers does not remain in the post

Whoever assumes the role will have oversight of rural affairs. Brexiteers James Cleverly and Rishi Sunak have both previously held Cabinet positions in Johnson’s Government and experienced increased profile during the election campaign.

The publication notes that longest-ever serving Farming Minster George Eustice could be seen as a ‘safe pair of hands’ during a period of ‘unprecedented change’ at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Rebecca Pow, Nigel Adams and Tracey Crouch are also listed, with the latter seen as a ‘green, animal welfare-friendly’ choice for her anti-fox hunting, anti-badger culling stance. Zac Goldsmith was tipped to be given the job, as is well known for his stance on environmental issues, however he lost his seat on Thursday.
