Making Rural Patient Voices Count

20 Oct 2026

A new report from the Patients Association calls for stronger protections to ensure patients can shape health and care services, and see their concerns acted on.

Drawing on discussions with patients, carers and community organisations, the report sets out seven principles for independent patient voice as the Health Bill progresses through Parliament.

These include freedom to speak openly, involving patients in decisions, clear legal powers, secure funding and public accountability. It also calls for closer working with trusted community organisations and greater efforts to reach people whose views are often missed.

What Does This Mean For Rural Communities?

For rural areas, meaningful involvement needs to take account of travel distances, limited transport and digital access. People need accessible ways to share their experiences, including options beyond online engagement.

The report’s message is clear: listening must lead to action. Patients should know how their views have influenced decisions and what improvements will follow.
