Maternity Care, Investment And Access

05 Aug 2026

Improving maternity services has been high on the Government’s agenda in recent weeks, with a £4.5 million investment announced for Berkshire to upgrade maternity and neonatal facilities, helping tackle urgent safety issues including ageing infrastructure, ventilation and fire safety. The funding forms part of a wider national programme to improve maternity care following the recommendations of the Amos Review.

Yet while investment in buildings and facilities is essential, events elsewhere in England highlight another challenge that many rural communities continue to face: simply being able to access maternity services close to home.

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has recently announced plans for the temporary suspension of births at North Devon District Hospital from 11 August, citing consultant staffing shortages that mean it cannot safely guarantee the level of senior medical support women may require during labour. The Trust says it will continue exploring every possible opportunity to avoid suspending the service and is working with neighbouring providers, NHS Devon Integrated Care Board and NHS England South West to find a solution.

For expectant parents across North Devon, the temporary changes could mean significantly longer journeys to alternative consultant-led maternity units. The Trust has acknowledged that many families already live some distance from Barnstaple and says it will work with each family individually to discuss their options and the support available.

These two announcements illustrate the wider picture facing maternity services across England. Investment in safer facilities and modern infrastructure is an important step forward, but for many rural communities, access to care remains just as important as the quality of the buildings themselves. Workforce shortages, long travel distances and maintaining resilient local services continue to present significant challenges for families living in rural and remote areas.
