Age UK Waltham Forest is highlighting the positive impact that accessible, community-based exercise can have on both physical and mental wellbeing in later life.
Its varied programme includes activities such as dance, table tennis, tai chi, walking football, seated yoga and Zumba, offering opportunities for older people of all abilities to stay active in ways that suit them. Alongside improving mobility, balance and coordination, participants describe benefits including greater confidence, improved mental wellbeing and valuable social connections.
The programme also demonstrates that staying active does not have to be competitive. By creating welcoming, low-pressure environments where people can enjoy movement at their own pace, community organisations can help reduce loneliness while supporting healthier, more independent lives.
While this example comes from an urban community, it highlights approaches that could be adapted in rural areas, where opportunities for older people to stay active and connected can be more limited. By offering accessible, welcoming activities, communities can help improve both physical and mental wellbeing while tackling loneliness and social isolation.
