Join this online event on 17 March (1-2:30 pm) to learn about how to develop digital skills and resources in rural communities.
The event will launch the Creative Digital Hubs Toolkit, which aims to be a guide to delivering creative digital projects. The toolkit includes real-world examples of creative digital projects making tangible impact for communities.
The event will include an overview of the outcomes of the Digital Together project and case studies from creative digital projects in three communities in Cornwall as well as presentations from Cornwall Council’s Digital device and lending library scheme and Cornwall Rural Community Charity.
The Creative Digital Toolkit is a practical guide and resource designed to empower organisations, community groups, and individuals to create and nurture creative digital hubs and projects.
Digital technology is not only a big opportunity for improving basic skills – it can open up a world of opportunities for artistic, history-based, environmental, activities that engage communities. Using creativity and engaging projects involves incorporating imaginative, hands-on approaches to make learning more engaging and relatable. By blending digital tools with creative activities—like designing simple graphics, creating digital stories, or exploring photography—learners can connect with technology in ways that relate to their lives and more feel practical and enjoyable.
Village halls and community centres can provide the focal point for socialising, wellbeing and learning, especially in rural areas where fewer public amenities and transport links are present. They can be the centre for community activity and now more than ever are providing localised digital inclusion provision to their beneficiaries. Community spaces have the potential to serve as creative digital hubs where people can access digital tools, share knowledge, and foster creativity and develop solutions for local needs.
The toolkit outlines the rationale for creating creative digital hubs and projects, provides case study examples of real communities using technology to tackle local challenges, and provides a guide for how to get things started.
Digital Together is a community asset-based approach to tackling digital exclusion that goes beyond providing access to skills training. By supporting communities to embed digital as a tool, the project aims to help them achieve their aims towards building sustainable communities.
This toolkit draws on real-world examples and actionable strategies from the University of Plymouth’s research as part of the Digital Together partnership, funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund managed by Cornwall Council between 2022 and 2024.
