Community Energy – Putting the power back in your hands

Northern Powergrid is committed to support the growth of community energy in its region, coming at a time when the UK Government has set out how it plans to deliver on the ambitious target of delivering 8 GW of local and community energy by 2030.

Northern Powergrid has a newly formed Community Energy Team which is actively working to support organisations across the region in delivering their  community-led energy projects.

WHAT IS COMMUNITY ENERGY?

Community energy is when local people come together to create and manage energy projects.

These can include things like installing solar panels, improving energy efficiency in homes, or running local heating systems. The projects are led by the community and sometimes done in partnership with businesses or councils.

THE AIM IS TO SAVE ENERGY, REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS, AND KEEP THE BENEFITS LOCAL.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

- HELP FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

- REDUCE ENERGY COSTS AND SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITIES

- HELP PEOPLE STAY WARM AND REDUCES FUEL POVERTY

WHAT THE COMMUNITY ENERGY TEAM CAN PROVIDE

Training

We can provide training modules (either online or face-to-face) on a variety of subjects, tailored to the CE group’s needs. These can range from project management courses for newly established groups, to carbon reduction plans and energy efficiency tips for more established groups.

Guidance

We can help locate and support the application for funding grants, as well as providing letters of support for applications. We can also assist with the connections process, ensuring the process is as clear as possible.

Engagement

We will be coordinating and putting on our own CE events at targeted locations, as well as attending events across the regions.

We will also be producing digital/print media to clarify the purpose of the team and advertise CE to as wide of an audience as possible, with the intention of diversifying our portfolio by supporting new groups to develop in areas that historically would not have previous knowledge of what options are available to them.

Each quarter the Community Energy Team will provide updates on events and funding opportunities and Community Energy Forums.
