Digital Inclusion Action Plan Announced

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has unveiled a comprehensive Digital Inclusion Action Plan, a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing digital skills and access across the UK. This action plan addresses a critical need, as one in four Britons currently faces barriers to digital inclusion.

The plan outlines initial steps towards fostering a digitally inclusive society where no one is left behind. Spearheaded by Tech Secretary, the Rt Hon Peter Kyle MP, and Telecoms Minister, Sir Chris Bryant MP, this initiative seeks to ensure that everyone can participate fully in our rapidly evolving digital world. The government acknowledges the critical role digital skills and access play in economic growth and the effectiveness of public services.

In an unprecedented move, major technology companies including Google, BT, and Vodafone have committed to supporting this initiative. Google has pledged to provide intensive digital skills training for adults with low digital competencies. Vodafone is set to help one million people by donating connectivity and technology. Meanwhile, BT will extend its efforts by connecting digitally excluded households and offering digital training across various age groups.

Local Initiatives and Funding

The Action Plan includes substantial funding for local initiatives aimed at the most digitally-excluded groups, such as the elderly and low-income households. Local authorities, charities, and combined authorities are recognised as crucial players in driving these initiatives forward. They will have access to new funding to develop tailored solutions that address unique local challenges.

Strategic Partnerships and Community Impact

The plan also highlights partnerships with organisations like the Digital Poverty Alliance to provide necessary technology to those in need. These collaborative efforts feature the importance of community involvement and the power of localised solutions in bridging the digital divide.

Ensuring Rural Perspectives and Realities Are Considered

Recognising the specific challenges faced by rural communities, the RSN is championing the integration of rural perspectives to ensure that the digital transition is equitable and reflective of rural realities. This includes advocating for robust internet connectivity and tailored educational resources essential for rural areas.

To shape this initiative effectively, DSIT is forming a Digital Inclusion Action Committee and has opened a Call for Evidence to gather diverse insights and recommendations. As valued members of the RSN, your participation is crucial. We encourage you to engage with the action plan, contribute to the Call for Evidence, and consider joining the committee by submitting an Expression of Interest. The Expression of Interest process is open until 23:55 on 26th March and you can find out more in the Candidate Pack

Your insights will help ensure that digital inclusion benefits extend throughout our rural communities, enhancing opportunities and improving quality of life for all.
