In a recent parliamentary session, Simon Fell, Member of Parliament for Barrow and Furness, engaged with the Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, about advancing rural connectivity. Highlighting the success of Project Gigabit, Fell noted the significant leap from 6% to over 80% of the UK now having gigabit connections, marking a monumental achievement in digital infrastructure.
Whilst the impact is being seen in some areas with companies delivering improvements, challenges remain, especially in reaching the most remote properties. Fell emphasized the need for innovative solutions, such as leveraging more wireless infrastructure to speed up delivery and reduce costs.
Julia Lopez confirmed that the government is committed to a technology-agnostic approach, incorporating wireless connectivity and low Earth orbit satellites, ensuring diverse and robust solutions for rural broadband expansion. The focus remains on ensuring every rural home and business benefits from high-speed internet, bridging the digital divide and fostering economic growth in these areas.
This dialogue underscores the ongoing efforts and collaborative approach needed to enhance rural connectivity, promising a digitally inclusive future for all regions across the UK.
