Farmers report surge in fly-tipping incidents as lockdown sees dumps closed

Rural areas around the UK have seen a dramatic increase in fly-tipping over the last number of weeks, with many households seeing the lockdown period as an ideal time for a spring clean of homes and gardens

The Countryside Alliance (CLA) states that the UK has seen a 300 per cent rise in fly-tipping in certain areas and the impact this is having on the communities and countryside has been called ‘unacceptable’.

Many local authorities have had to shut waste recycling centres at this time and are concentrating on keeping kerbside collections going.

The CLA says the closure of household recycling centres due to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the scaling back of bin collections in some areas, could lead to more waste being dumped in rural areas.
