'Growing support' for the Keep Us Tuned In crusade to protect television

A huge response to the Daily Express Keep Us Tuned In crusade is increasing pressure on ministers to protect traditional TV services

Television and radio transmitted through an aerial is only guaranteed until the mid-2030s under current government plans.

The Daily Express and the Broadcast 2040+ coalition, which includes the Rural Services Network, Arqiva and campaign group Silver Voices, are demanding ministers take action to protect terrestrial television until at least the 2040s.

Dennis Reed, director of Silver Voices, said there is “growing support” for the crusade and according to the official petition website, “There is scarcely a constituency in the United Kingdom, from Shetland to the Scilly islands, where there is not support for our campaign.”

According to a survey, more than eight in 10 people aged over 65 see traditional TV as important or essential to their daily lives.

Unless the Government takes action ahead of November’s World Radiocommunication Conference, the spectrum of frequency allocated to digital terrestrial TV (Freeview) may be lost and services disbanded.

The Government said its current legislation gives “certainty to platform operators and broadcasters, while recognising that in 10 years’ time the broadcasting landscape might look very different”.

The petition to show support for the crusade has now surpassed 25,000 signatures and you can find this petition here

The Rural Services Network (RSN) is a founding coalition member of the Broadcast 2040+ campaign. The campaign was established to ensure the Government’s media policy protects vital broadcast TV and radio services for decades to come. As it stands, these services are only guaranteed until the early 2030s.
