Labour to establish commission to aid the high street’s post-pandemic revival

Local paper the Winsford Guardian has reported that Labour is set to reveal the details of a new high street commission designed to inform its policies on how to rebuild town centres affected by closures throughout the pandemic

Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds MP (Lab) will announce an independent Rebuilding Our High Streets Commission when visiting West Yorkshire, bringing together experts from businesses in retail, leisure and hospitality, as well as representatives of the trade union and social enterprise sectors.

Labour said its independent review will look at how high streets can be supported post-pandemic to continue to be places where people shop, socialise, meet, work and live.

The commissioners will also come up with ideas for bringing empty commercial properties back into use, levelling the playing field between bricks-and-mortar businesses and online firms, and promoting entrepreneurship and innovation to reflect the needs of communities.
