Lincolnshire Refugee Doctor Project CIC

We are a Community Interest Company, non-profit organisation original established in 2016. We were founded by Dr Andrew Mowat, and are now led by Dr Vince Ion our Chair.

Our mission is "To provide humanitarian support to medically qualified refugees and their families. For them to resettle and be able to continue their medical careers within the local NHS, and to make a contribution to the workforce needs of the local NHS"

When the project commenced there were 5 similar programmes in the UK but all of those were based in cities, we were the first to establish a programme in a rural location.

Our programme started recruiting in 2019 for Grimsby and the surrounding area initially, we have 12 programme members, two who have achieved GMC registration already. Later this year we will expand the Grimsby part of our project to increase our numbers in that area, additionally we will open the Lincoln (and surrounding area) recruitment phase of our project. Our aim is over a period of time to have recruited 30 doctors for the Grimsby area and 30 doctors for the Lincoln area.

Our programme supports our members with;

Sourcing accommodation
Social Mentorship
Clinical Mentorship
English Language support and examination - ESOL/OET
English Language Medical Assessments (PLAB 1 and PLAB 2) preparation
3 month work placements
GMC registration
Support to gain employment in the NHS

We have ensured our programme is tailored to the refugees personal skills and knowledge to ensure that we make the process as individual as possible to achieve a successful transition into NHS employment.

Our programme is supported by a number of key working partners and volunteers who are critical to our success, these range from Health Education England, Commissioners, Acute Trusts, Private Sector Organisations, local charities and numerous individuals who give their time freely to support our Doctors. Our current focus is on building key partnerships in the Lincoln area specifically around, housing and accommodation, clinical mentorship volunteers, social mentorship volunteers and charities who can support us with our programme.
