More than a million rural households handed energy price cut

The Telegraph reports that more than a million households stand to benefit from Liz Truss’s promise to provide support to homes that rely on heating oil.

While homes that are connected to the national grid have benefitted from price caps by the energy regulator Ofgem, off-grid homes had so far been unprotected. About 1.5 million homes, many in rural areas, rely on heating oil or alternative sources of power. After announcing a new price cap for homes on the grid, the newly-elected Prime Minister also announced support for off-grid homes, such as those that rely on oil or using heat networks. While wholesale gas and electricity prices have also spiked, most homes on these tariffs are protected by the energy price cap, which limits how much suppliers can charge.

Oil-reliant homes have no such protections in place and face no upper limit on what they have to pay. The Countryside Alliance has called for off-grid households to be given a £400 grant to purchase oil upfront, and is working with suppliers to help households pay monthly, rather than in lump sums when their tanks are refilled to ease to burden. The full details of the announcement are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
