NALC makes historic appearance at Corby Pride

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC), the national body that represents 10,000 parish and town councils in England, made a historic appearance at Corby Pride on 22 June 2024, marking its first-ever involvement at a Pride event. This milestone event underscores NALC's unwavering commitment to diversity, inclusion, and support for the LGBT+ community, setting a precedent for local government participation in such events.

Supported by Corby Town Council, Corby Pride was a vibrant celebration of diversity and unity in Northamptonshire. The event featured a lively parade, live entertainment, community stalls, and a diverse range of activities aimed at fostering a spirit of inclusiveness and celebrating the LGBT+ community.

NALC actively engaged with the essence of Pride Month by participating in the parade that started at Corby Cube and proceeded to Coronation Park. NALC representatives also had the opportunity to meet with the local mayor, Cllr Ross Armour, to discuss ongoing initiatives, further demonstrating their active engagement in fostering more inclusive local governance

NALC's involvement in Corby Pride 2024 is part of a broader strategy to promote diversity and inclusivity across the sector. This strategy includes a variety of initiatives such as creating content like blogs on LGBT+ issues, setting up a national network dedicated to LGBT+ councillors, and continuous support of Pride events across the country. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that local councils are not only representative of their communities but also champions of equality and inclusivity.

Cllr Keith Stevens, NALC's chair, expressed great enthusiasm about NALC's participation, commenting, "This is a significant milestone for NALC. Our presence at Corby Pride 2024 reflects our dedication to promoting equality and inclusivity within parish and town councils and the communities they serve. We are honoured to be part of this celebration and look forward to engaging further and supporting the LGBT+ community."

"I’m really proud to be here today representing the LGBT+ councillors network," expressed Cllr Luke Trevaskis, the chair of NALC’s national network for LGBT councillors. "Events like this are the foundation of all of our communities. They raise awareness about ongoing issues and focus us on the work we still need to do in our communities. They really remind us of the importance of equality and inclusion for everyone. NALC plays such a key role in trying to address inequalities and diversities in the sector and I’m proud to be able to join them today at their first Pride. It’s even better that this is an event that has been organised by one of our local councils."
