The Rural Services Network [1] has welcomed today's government U-turn on increased National Insurance payments by the self-employed.

For the year October 2015 to September 2016, some 17.6% of employed people in rural areas were self-employed – compared to 14.6% of employed people in urban areas.

RSN chief executive Graham Biggs MBE said: "The impact of any increase would have been greater on the rural economy."

Mr Biggs added: "The government needs to reflect on this point as it develops its thinking on this issue."
