The Countryside Alliance recently hosted a parliamentary roundtable on rural digital connectivity, bringing together parliamentarians, policymakers and industry experts to explore how next-generation technology could help close the digital divide facing rural communities.
Chaired by Lord Herbert, the discussion focused on the growing role of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology and its potential to reach the hardest-to-connect rural areas. Participants emphasised that while technological innovation is advancing rapidly, regulatory frameworks must keep pace if rural communities are to benefit fully.
The session was sponsored by Jenny Riddell-Carpenter, highlighting increasing cross-party recognition that reliable digital connectivity is now essential infrastructure for economic growth, access to public services and social inclusion in rural areas.
Representatives from Amazon Kuiper shared insights into how satellite connectivity could complement existing terrestrial networks, helping to overcome physical and economic barriers that have long limited rural rollout. Satellite technology was also discussed as an important element of national resilience, supporting undersea cables and land-based networks.
The roundtable reinforced the importance of a technology-neutral approach to rural connectivity, with a shared focus on ensuring services are affordable, reliable and fit for rural needs as the UK’s digital infrastructure continues to evolve.
