RHCA Member - Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust covers one of the most rural geographies in England. Covering over 2,500 square miles and with just under 11,000 staff, we supply health and social care services to some of the most isolated and diverse rural dwellings in the country.

Emergency medicine and critical care are delivered via the UK’s first specialist emergency care hospital – The Northumbria – supported by three general hospitals and seven further community sites. Thanks to a close partnership with Northumberland County Council we also deliver integrated care across a range of community and social services.

Time and distance are key challenges. Community teams have further to travel and so can support fewer patients per day. Support (if required) will take longer to arrive and in bad weather may not even be possible.

In 2017/18 our staff delivered over 368,000 outpatient appointments and made 116,000 inpatient admissions. In 2015 the Care Quality Commission rated us ‘Outstanding’.

We strive to continually improve the services we provide, to ensure they are person-centred and can be tailored to the needs and aspirations of individual users wherever they live, supporting them and their families to stay as healthy as possible, and when necessary access highest quality health and care as close to home as possible.
