The National Centre for Remote and Rural Medicine, part of the University of Central Lancashire, provides education and training to equip health professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide gold standard care in remote and rural locations locally, nationally and internationally. 

Patients deserve the best care regardless of their location. Rural medicine has been under-served for a number of years and the Centre aims to provide a focus for remote and rural medical education and research in collaboration with colleagues globally. Our aim is to provide a centre which will address issues affecting recruitment and retention of staff in remote and rural areas and provide solutions which will help to achieve better outcomes for both staff and patients.

Digital technology is playing an increasingly important role in providing effective and safe health care in remote and rural regions and our Centre is exploring the way technology can answer the issues of remote teaching and care.

We operate on the firm belief that medics and allied healthcare professionals should be able to attain skills and qualifications to ensure they feel confident and secure when looking after their patients’ needs, wherever they are in the world. Every contact with a patient should always enhance the outcome.

Our Location

The Centre is ideally located in West Cumbria, a rural community with the typical problems of difficult medical workforce recruitment, limited access to specialist care, and a population significantly disadvantaged by its location.

The region is not alone in its challenges, but provides a beautiful setting for training regional and global clinicians in all aspects of medicine relating to living, working and recreation in remote and rural environments.

Being located in West Cumbria, the Centre provides students with a unique set of opportunities, allowing the variety of clinical experiences which comes with the challenges of remote and rural medicine.
