Location: North East Population: 277,150 (Mid-year estimate 2015) Interesting fact: In 1814 there were 24 shipyards in Sunderland which increased to more than 60 by 1840. Over 150 wooden ships were build in Sunderland in 1850. There were 2,025 employed shipwrights and a further 2,000 employees in related industries.
