UK food shortages: Rural areas and summer holiday favourites at ‘back of queue’ for deliveries

The i paper reports that with an estimated shortfall of about 100,000 HGV drivers due to the ongoing effects of Brexit and the pandemic, the national lorry driver shortages will be felt mostly by shops in rural areas and tourist hotspots such as Cornwall, Norfolk and the Highland

Haulage firms will almost certainly prioritise their largest clients – the leading supermarket chains – when considering who to deliver to, experts say.

Therefore, as supermarket giants pile pressure on suppliers to serve cities and bigger towns, people living and holidaying in rural areas could be forced to travel to large towns or cities to buy food and other essentials in the coming weeks.
