Village spurns Facebook

Blewbury in Oxfordshire, a small village with a population of just 1,581, has launched its own app to allow residents to share updates, comments and message each other.

Matt Phillips, a Blewbury local, worked with the media company Disciple after becoming fed up with traditional social media.

‘Facebook is designed for advertisers, not communities,’ he said.  ‘We want to create a focal point for campaigning and fundraising for things like our new village hall, so I hope the Blewbury app can help us do that.’

One tenth of the population signed up in the first few days, and Mr Phillips says he hopes it is a model that other villages can emulate in the future.
