A new group has been launched to champion the role of women in local and rural community rail routes.

Women in Community Rail aims to promote and supporte inclusiveness and diversity in the community rail sector.

It was officially launched with at Manchester Victoria station on Thursday, 30 June.

Endorsed by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP), Women in Community Rail (WiCR) was established earlier this year.

Its ambition is to get more people from all backgrounds involved in community rail, making it more reflective of the customers and communities served by local railways.

The group aims to create a mentoring network for people throughout the industry; share best practice, knowledge and expertise; and encourage young people to get involved with Community Rail.

Chairwoman Marion Atkinson said: "I am absolutely delighted with the support we have received so far from industry partners.

"It's clear from the enthusiasm shown this is something that is not only needed but valued by partners. I would encourage everyone to become a member of the group and help us achieve change together."

Guests at the launch event heard a keynote address from Kathryn O'Brien, customer experience director for train company TransPennine Express (TPE).

She said: "TPE is passionate about building a more diverse railway which reflects the rich and varied communities we serve.

"I am delighted to be a member of WiCR and know that the group will play a pivotal part in encouraging more people into the world of community rail."

ACoRP general manager Neil Buxton said the formation of WiCR was an important step towards recognising the influence of women in the sector.

"The group will be helping to address wider diversity issues in Community Rail, which ACoRP welcomes and supports. We congratulate them on the successful launch and look forward to working with them in the future."
