In the regions of Westmorland and Furness, a groundbreaking initiative has been making significant strides in reshaping local care through the power of community micro-enterprises. Spearheaded by Community Catalysts, the project began in 2022 and has flourished, integrating deeply with local government structures and community resources.
Over two years, this innovative programme has supported the creation and growth of 32 community micro-enterprises across South Lakes, Furness, and Eden, delivering essential services to the elderly and disabled right in their homes. This initiative has not only facilitated personalised and accessible care but has also created 26 new jobs, bringing both economic and social benefits to the area.
These enterprises provide a plethora of services, including personal care, meal preparation, companionship, and much more, tailored to enhance the quality of life for 125 locals weekly. The services are listed on the Cumbria | Small Good Stuff online directory, making them easily accessible to those in need.
The success of these enterprises has been bolstered by the Community Catalysts’ Development Programme, which offers extensive support to enterprise leaders, ensuring that services are not only compliant with legal standards but are also high-quality and sustainable.
Community Catalysts has also engaged in extensive promotional efforts, including workshops and festivals, to integrate these services into the broader health and social care ecosystem provided by Westmorland and Furness Council. These efforts have ensured that residents have a wide range of care options available locally, promoting a sense of independence and well-being among community members.
The project's future looks promising with continued support from local government and business leaders, ensuring that the benefits of community micro-enterprises can be sustained and expanded.
